Mt. Mitchell is an integral part of Kansas' history. As part of the Bleeding Kansas Story as it relates to the Underground Railroad and Territorial Kansas. As part of the Freedom's Frontier National Heritage Area this site will become a part of telling the pre-civil war story and enduring struggle for freedom that Kansas & Missouri played a role in. The top of Mt. Mitchell is native prairie that has not been grazed or altered. Many wildflowers, native grasses, birds and wildlife can be spotted at this historic site. The monument on top of Mt. Mitchell has a brass plaque in commemoration of the Connecticut colony also known as the Beecher Bible and Rifle Colony, which settled at Wabaunsee. The monument is erected on Mt. Mitchell through the generosity William Mitchell by the Kansas State Historical Society 1956. In the near future, this site will become more accessible and interpretative for visitors.
