Bernard Warkentin (1847-1908) was a significant figure in the history of American immigration for promoting German-Russian Mennonite settlement in the Central Great Plains region of the United States, and in the history of agriculture for introducing and improving Central European wheat varieties that revolutionized American grain production. Warkenstin Homestead, in Halstead, was placed on the National Register of Historic Places, 2-15-74, and named a National Historic Landmark, 12-14-90.
